Shrimp boil ingredients and substitution options:

  • Shrimp — I prefer to use large shrimp with the tails on. I usually pick up a bag of the largest frozen shrimp I can find and thaw them out a few minutes before I start cooking the shrimp boil.
  • Corn — Corn on the cob is a must for this recipe as corn kernels will not work here.
  • Smoked sausage — Andouille sausage or Keilbasa sauce is great. But you can use any type of smoked sausage you prefer. You can also check out my best sausage recommendations for a seafood boil.
  • Chicken stock — This is needed to add flavor to the shrimp boil sauce. It is also a must if you want to cut down on the amount of butter used to make the shrimp boil butter sauce. You can also use seafood stock, or a flavorful seafood broth here instead.
  • Water — Needed to par-cook the corn and potatoes beforehand.
  • Oil — Needed to pan-sear the sausages.
  • Potatoes — Any type of potato can be used here. If you have baby potatoes then keep them whole, but if you have larger potatoes, cut them down to about 1 ½ inch pieces.
  • Shrimp seasoning — A must-have for making a delicious shrimp boil. I used a combination of these spices to make my shrimp seasoning (1 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp paprika, 1 tsp cayenne pepper, ½ tsp lemon pepper, ½ tsp red chili flakes, 1 ½ tsp oregano, 1 ½ tsp thyme, ¾ tsp salt.
  • Bay leaves — I used bay leaves in most of my seafood recipes, but you can skip them if you prefer.
  • Old Bay (optional) — Adds that deliciously complex seafood boil flavor that most people love to this shrimp boil recipe. But you can leave it out if you prefer.
  • Hot sauce (optional) — If you like spicy food, then use any type of hot sauce including Franks hot sauce, etc.
  • Garlic — Freshly minced garlic adds a delicious flavor to this recipe. You can substitute with store-bought minced garlic if you prefer, but garlic powder is not a good sub here.
  • Onion — Freshly chopped onions add flavor and a bit of thickness and body to the shrimp boil sauce used to coat the shrimp, potatoes, and sausages. Do not substitute with onion powder.
  • Butter — Unsalted butter is needed here. Do not sub with salted butter.

How Long to Boil Shrimp

Shrimp cooks really quickly and overcooking ruins the texture of shrimp. As such, you typically only need to boil shrimp for 2-3 minutes on each side.
