Carbs in hot chocolate

On keto, it is very important to know how many carbs are in the foods or drinks you plan to enjoy. Drinks like hot chocolate contain close to 30 grams of carbs per cup. This means that in their traditional form, you cannot have them and remain in ketosis. However, if you make adjustments to the ingredients used and make a keto friendly version you will be able to enjoy it guilt-free as it is way lower in carbs.

How many carbs are in this keto hot chocolate drink?

There are only 5 grams of net carbs in each serving of this low carb hot chocolate drink. Each serving is ¾ of a cup of keto hot chocolate.

Tips to make hot chocolate

  • To make this recipe as creamy as possible while keeping it keto-friendly , you will need to add a little bit of xanthan gum.
  • Sweet spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg, or some of my favorite nutmeg substitutes, will add extra flavor to this drink. You can go ahead and use the sweet or warm spices that you prefer though.

Next, mix all the dry ingredients into a small bowl. This will include the sifted cocoa powder, xanthan gum, the sweetener, and the spices you choose, (I added ground nutmeg, but you can use other warm spices instead).

Then, pour the almond milk, the heavy cream, the dark chocolate bars, the cinnamon stick, and the powder mixture, into the crockpot. Then program the crock pot for 4 hours.

Once you’ve left the ingredients in the crock pot for 4 hours, then you will stir and remove the drink from the crock pot.

This final step is also optional. However, if you want your hot chocolate to have a very soft and delicate texture, you should blend it for a couple of minutes just before serving it.

Lastly, top the hot chocolate recipe. The topping for this recipe is totally up to you. I choose to add low carb marshmallows, sprinkled with some cinnamon powder, sugar free chocolate syrup, and a few low carb chocolate shavings.

Keep in mind that the low carb marshmallows do add some extra carbs to this low carb hot chocolate drink.

How to store sugar free hot chocolate

You can definitely store this hot chocolate if you have leftovers or if you’ve decided to make it ahead. To store, place in an air-tight container and place in the refrigerator.

Can this hot chocolate recipe be made ahead?

Hot chocolate is great when served immediately. However, you can make this ahead and warm it in the microwave or on the stovetop when you’re ready to enjoy it.
