  • 2 tablespoons pickling spice mix
  • 1 ½ cup vinegar
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 1 ½ tbsp salt

Useful Tip

For the amount of pickled red onions this recipe makes (3 large red onions + 3 cups total liquid), you’ll need about 1 quart (32 oz) of mason jar space. You have two great options depending on what you have on hand or how you want to store them:

Option 1: One 32 oz Wide Mouth Mason Jar – This should fit the entire batch easily. If you need some, you can get these great 32oz wide mouth jars on Amazon.

Pro Tip: Always choose wide mouth jars when pickling— they’re easier to pack, easier to clean, and there’s less spillage when pouring in the brine and it’s so much easier to remove your pickled onions without a mess!

📌 Useful Tip

My onions were thickly sliced, therefore, they were ready to eat within 24 hours. However, if your onions are very thinly sliced, you can enjoy them within 10 minutes or a hour! You’ll know they’re ready once they turn bright pink and are tender.
