  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 2 cups beef broth (or any other broth including bone broth)
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp xanthan gum
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Then in a sauce pot, combine the butter, beef broth, and garlic powder.

Then sprinkle with the xanthan gum and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Cook the gravy over medium-high heat until it boils. This will be about 1 minute. Then remove from the heat and serve as desired.

How can I make this keto gravy dairy free?

You can make this a dairy-free gravy by using almond milk instead of butter. The almond milk has a really mild taste and will work perfectly in the gravy. The taste will not compromise anything and you will be able to use it for any meat or vegetables.

Can this gravy be made with coconut flour?

You can make this gravy with coconut flour. To make with coconut flour, you will need to make a keto friendly roux that you will then add to the gravy.

Follow these tips if you want to make a coconut flour roux to add the your gravy recipe.

  1. Gather all of your ingredients listed above including an extra 3/4 tablespoons of coconut flour.
  2. Make your keto gravy as shown above.
  3. Then proceed to make the Make the coconut flour roux by combining 2 tbsp butter and 3/4 tablespoon of coconut flour in a separate saucepan. Cook until a paste forms then whisk this into the gravy.

Tips for making gravy

Here are some tips to help you get the best gravy possible:

If the gravy is lumpy, simply pour your lumpy gravy into a blender and give it a whir for no more than thirty to sixty seconds. Do not over blend.

If the gravy is too thin, just add some heavy cream and gently simmer or stir in a bit of xanthan gum, not more than ¼ tsp.

If the gravy tastes good, but doesn’t look good because a crust or skin may have formed on the gravy just gently blend. Not for too long.

If your gravy looks gray instead of brown, the problem may be in the pan you used. Avoid making gravy in an aluminum (anodized is okay) pan as it can turn the gravy gray. You can also use liquid gravy browner to improve the color.

And lastly, if your gravy doesn’t have that special touch, then whisking in a tablespoon of butter or heavy cream just before serving will give the gravy a rich, satiny texture.

How to easily thicken low carb gravy

I’ve briefly touched on how to thicken above, however, if you’re looking for more ideas on how to thicken your gravy, try these ideas out:

  • Use xanthan gum in the recipe. This is a popular keto friendly thickener that will add no additional carbs to your sugar free gravy.
  • You can also make a roux – by combining 2 tablespoons butter and 1 tablespoon fine almond flour or 3/4 tablespoon of coconut flour and 2 tablespoon of butter. Cook until a paste forms then whisk this into the gravy.
  • Use full-fat milk in the recipe for added thickness.

Storing tips

To store in the fridge, simply pour in a jar with a lid and keep refrigerated for up to 4 days.

To store in the freezer, run the gravy through a blender, then pour into ice cube trays. Freeze and transfer into an airtight container. You can store this way for up to a month.

To reheat, place the gravy cubes in a sauce pan. Set over heat until thawed, give it a good whisk and serve.
