Need a quick substitute for garlic salt? This homemade garlic salt recipe is one of my go-to spice mixes for adding amazing salty and garlicky flavor to a variety of dishes, including meats, vegetables, soups, and more. It is simple, handy, and only needs two ingredients!

I love making my own spice and seasoning blends because I know that they’ll be preservative-free, and this homemade garlic salt is no different. I would rather take a few minutes to make it than grab the store-bought version.

Additionally, my DIY garlic salt allows me to customize the intensity of both the garlic and the salt, making it perfect for people who love to customize their spices and seasonings.

What is the formula for garlic salt?

The ratio of garlic powder to salt can vary by brand and personal preference. However, the basic and most common formula for homemade garlic salt is a 3:1 ratio.

Ingredients

To make a small batch of garlic salt, you will need only two main ingredients:

  1. 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
  2. 3 tablespoons of kosher salt or sea salt

How to make garlic salt

  1. Combine garlic powder and salt: In a clean, dry bowl, mix the garlic with the kosher or sea salt. Make sure to distribute the garlic evenly throughout the salt.

Storing your garlic salt:

Once the mixture is dry and well combined, transfer it to an airtight container or a spice jar. Store it in a cool, dark place to maintain its freshness and flavor.

Possible variations

Besides the classic garlic salt, you can also make:

Garlic herb salt

Add another layer of flavor by infusing your garlic salt with herbs like basil, rosemary, thyme, and oregano. This variation is perfect for seasoning potatoes and vegetables.

Smoked garlic salt

Instead of sea salt, use smoked salt and garlic powder to make a smoked garlic salt recipe that can be used for barbecue, grilled veggies, and hearty stews.

Roasted garlic salt

You’ll need 4 peeled garlic cloves, ½ cup of salt, and an oven preheated to 400F.

Place the garlic cloves into the food processor and pulverize for a few seconds. Then add the salt to the food processor and grind until well mixed.

Place in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes until golden and aromatic. Place in the food processor again and grind to break up. Then use or store.

Creating your own garlic salt is a simple, cost-effective way to enhance the flavors of your favorite dishes. Ready to make it? Check out the full recipe below!
