What You Need to Make French Toast
A Shallow Dish or Bowl — You want to whisk the custard mixture together (eggs, milk, sugar, etc.) in a shallow sdish or bowl so that it’s easier to dip the bread into the mixture without any issue.
Whisk — A whisk makes mixing the custard ingredients together easy.
Measuring Cups and Spoons — I use measuring cups and spoons for all my recipes in a attempt to keep my recipes tasting great! If you need some accurate measuring cups and spoons, this one from amazon is my favorite set.
I’ve been using this set for all my recipes lately. It’s solid, easy to clean, and way more accurate than the plastic ones I used to have. Totally worth it for under $20!
Large Skillet or Griddle — Using a non stick skillet of a griddle makes it so much easier to cook the French toast easily and fliffping is effortless too! This top-rated skillet from Amazon is perfect for making French toast.
Spatula — These also makes it that much easier to flip the French toast once it’s golden brown on one side. A flexible spatula is great if you’re worried about breaking the toast when flipping.
Tongs (optional) — If you don’t have a spatuals, then you can also use a pair of tongs to flip the French toast. Tongs can help you grab and turn the slices gently.
Sifter or Fine Mesh Strainer (optional) — If you’re sprinkling powdered sugar or cinnamon on top of your french toast, one of these is a must!
How to Make Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes from Scratch
Grab a medium-sized shallow bowl, and whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter in the pan.
Then dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, making sure both sides are evenly coated. Let the bread soak for just a few seconds. If you leave it in for too long, the bread will get soggy. If it’s in there for too little time, it won’t absorb enough of the custard — dipping the bread for 3 to 5 seconds per side is the way to go.
Then add the soaked bread slices to the pan and cook each slice for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy on the edges.
Once cooked, place your French toast on a plate and serve immediately. Top with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, or fresh fruit like strawberries or bananas!

Tips for Perfect French Toast
- Thick Slices Of Stale Bread is Best: Thicker slices of bread, that are slightly stale works best, as they absorbs the custard mixture without becoming too soggy. If you can, try to avoid using fresh, soft bread as much as possible.
- Make the Flavor Yours: If you want a little little extra flavor, simply add a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of orange juice to the custard mixture! Other customizations can work too!
- For Extra Crispy French Toast: If you love your French toast extra crispy, cook it on medium-low heat. I’ve tried 3–4 minutes for extra crispy.
- Make It Ahead: You can prepare the custard mixture ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. This will save you some time when you’re ready to make breakfast or brunch.
How to Serve French Toast
- Classic Topping Ideas: Serve your French toast with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh fruit (such as strawberries, blueberries, or sliced bananas).
- Some Decadent Toppings: Serve with some whipped cream, chocolate syrup, or even a drizzle of caramel sauce.
- Feeling For Savory? Try adding some bacon or a fried egg and some butter!
