Homemade allspice recipe
So, if you cannot find allspice, then you can rest assured that you can make a spice mix that evokes the same flavors with a mix of spices like ground cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, and cloves.
Also, because this spice blend is customizable, you can always just your spice quantities so as to make it taste exactly how you want!
What is allspice?
Allspice is a berry also known as Jamaica pepper, myrtle pepper, pimenta, or pimento, which comes from a tree in the myrtle family called Pimenta dioica. It is often used whole, but also popularly sold in its ground form. While it is one spice, it evokes the flavors of 4 spices including nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper. This is why many people think allspice is actually a mix of 3 or 4 spices.
If you’re out of allspice or can’t find it, today I will show you how to make allspice using cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and black pepper.
All spice ingredients
- 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon of ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon of ground cloves
- ¼ tablespoon of ground black pepper
How to make allspice at home
Gather all the spices listed above.
Then place 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of ground nutmeg, 1 tablespoon of ground cloves, and ¼ tablespoon of black pepper together in a bowl.
Mix well until properly combined.
Note:
Many people who make homemade allspice suggest only using cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. I’ve tried this version of homemade allspice but I find it lacks the slightly peppery finish that I can easily perceive in freshly ground allspice that is made from the allspice berries.
Therefore I always add a little ground black pepper to my allspice blend. I find the black pepper gives that slight peppery finish that other allspice mixes are missing.
Storing this homemade allspice blend
This simple recipe for Allspice is a small batch and can last about a month or 2 if you use Allspice often.
This allspice mix can easily last for about 6 months in a tightly sealed container before the spices lose their freshness.
I personally like to store my spices and spice blends in these handy spice jars.
Uses of this allspice mix recipe
Use this simple spice mix for a recipe that calls for ground allspice including cookies, pumpkin pie, spice cake, Jerk seasoning, homemade crab boil spice mix, ham glazes, pork recipes, chicken recipes, and more.
And, if you’re looking for more flavorful spice mixes, feel free to try this pumpkin spice without allspice recipe.
