Need some mason jars for your overnight oats? Then this is the perfect post for you because I think I’m kind of an expert when it comes to mason jars… lol, not really—but also, really!
I have so many of them I sometimes cannot believe it myself. I use them a lot, for canning, storage of spices and seasoning mixes, storage for various kitchen staples—and of course, for my latest craze: overnight oats.
Today, I will be sharing my opinions on what I think are the best types of mason jars for overnight oats, from the sizes to the styles and of course in terms of price!
What You Should Look for in a Good Mason Jar!
Mason jars for overnight oats have their work cut out for them as there are quite a few features they should have. These include:
- Great Quality Seals: You want mason jars that are going to stay airtight and will keep your overnight oats fresh. Therefore, a secure seal is a must for well-preserved oats so you don’t have to worry about freshness, or having any messes or spills in your fridge. And you don’t have to worry if you take them with you on the go!
- The Best Glass Quality: Not all mason jars are made the same when it comes to the quality of the glass used. Some mason jars are thicker, while others more on the thinner side. You want to choose mason jars that are sturdy enough to withstand daily use but not so heavy that it’s not practical for on-the-go use. Here’s something else no one really talks about: how awkward some mason jars are to hold. Those sleek, smooth-sided, minimalist jars look great, but they are not the best choice. Instead, go for ones with a bit of texture or a shape that naturally fits your hand—like the ones I’ve recommended below!
- The Right Size: 16 oz mason jars are the perfect sweet spot! “Why?” They are big enough to hold a hearty serving of overnight oats and leave ample space for fruit, and toppings. But, they’re not so large that you end up with a HUGE breakfast that leaves you feeling overly stuffed!
- The Right Shape – Wide Mouth is the Way to Go: I prefer, and therefore recommend wide mouth mason jars as they allow for easy filling and eating, compared to a narrow neck mason jar that can make it more difficult to get the oats and toppings both in and out of the jars! Washing the wide mouth jars are wayyyy easier too!
- Durability: I know that not everyone is like me and is willing to spend money on mason jars every time they see some good ones. Therefore, it’s important to choose mason jars that are both durable & reusable. In this case, you want to go with mason jars that are dishwasher safe, resistant to staining or cracking and of course, Mason jars are meant to be reused. Look for jars that are dishwasher safe and resistant to staining or cracking over time and, if they’re able to be frozen and used in the microwave that’s a plus too!
- Aesthetics: Okay, let’s face it—when your jar is Instagram-worthy, it makes your meal feel that much better! Therefore I always keep aesthetics in mind and choose mason jars that look beautiful and will make my food look great!
Not necessary, but good extras to have:
- Measurement markers
- Stackable lids
- BPA-free lids
The mason jars I will share below include these awesome features plus more!
The Top 3 Mason Jars I Recommend for Overnight Oats (As of Now!)
16 oz Wide Mouth Mason Jars (10-pack) by SEWANTA
These are my favorite food grade mason jars for overnight oats. They’re durable, high quality, microwave safe, dishwasher safe and freezer safe, and my overnight oats look so good in them!
I initially was drawn to these mason jars due to the shape and the wide mouth. I love adding lots of toppings and add ins to my overnight oats, so not all mason jars work for me. But, with these wide mouth mason jars I can easily add all my favorite toppings and add ins easily and I can scoop my overnight oats out with ease when eating! Even cleaning the mason jars afterwards is so much easier when they have a wide mouth!
Plus something else I like about these (and I’m sure you will too) is the measurement markings that make everything so much easier to track!
Also, I use these mason jars for more than just my overnight oats (hello pickling/canning, layered salads and smoothies), so they come in handy for keeping my food fresh.
Again—and this is one of my fav features—they’re 16 oz (which I absolutely love), so they’re great if you enjoy adding toppings to your oats! Plain overnight oats are pretty boring, so in order to enjoy them, I absolutely must include toppings and add-ins! These jars provide so much space to do just that. And these come in a pack of ten, which makes them perfect for meal prep for the week, with extra jars left over for other storage needs.
While these are my favorite mason jars for overnight oats, one thing I’m not crazy about is the lids—they’re a bit clunky and can be tricky to twist on smoothly, especially when your hands are wet or you’re in a rush. That said, they do seal super well and keep everything fresh, so I’ve learned to live with the trade-off.
I’m not the only one who loves these though. These mason jars have over 7000 reviews with a 4.8 star rating on amazon, which further proves how good they are!
If you’re anything like me and love a no-fuss breakfast, these jars are a total game-changer. Click here to grab a set on Amazon!

16oz Glass Jars with Airtight Lids (6-Pack) by NETANY
Another great set of food grade mason jars are these 16 ounce glass jars with airtight stackable lids. They’re slightly more expensive but are perfect for your overnight oats if you don’t like the design of the jars above.
Again, they’re wide mouth, have tightly sealed leakproof lids and they’re pretty durable, so they’re great for grab and go overnight oats.
What I also like about these jars are the fact that they stack up so well in your fridge or pantry because of the recessed lid tops. These lid tops allow for super neat stacking in your fridge or pantry without tipping, slipping or wasted space!
I love the lids on these jars, the size, the fact that they’re wide mouth and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you can get them with different color lids (although I only featured the white lids here)… but my one gripe is that they’re made of sleek glass. I sometimes get that little panic attack feeling when I grab these with moist hands.
Other than that, these mason jars are great for your overnight oats and they have over 1,700 positive reviews and 4.6 star rating on amazon!
