What Are Chaffles?

Chaffles are egg and cheese based waffle lookalikes. The main difference between a chaffle and a waffle is that the waffle is flour-based, while the chaffle is egg and cheese based. A chaffle is essentially a cheese waffle.

Tips on making egg cheese chaffles

They are fairly easy to make, but here are some suggestions for the perfect chaffles every time:

  • Make sure your waffle iron is at its maximum heat. This will ensure your chaffles are crispy.
  • Always use full-fat cheese. Cheese with less fat will not melt correctly, and you will not get a crispy chaffle.
  • If your chaffles aren’t crispy, this may be due to your heat settings.
  • You can use a mini waffle iron if you prefer, but it is not mandatory.

Ingredients for egg cheese chaffles

You will need:

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon dried chives
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Cooking oil for brushing the waffle iron

How To Make Egg And Cheese Chaffles

To make these easy chaffles, start by gathering all of your ingredients in one place.

Next, you will need to preheat your waffle iron.

Then, in a bowl, beat the egg until frothy.

Next, you will fold in the cheese, salt and pepper, and chives.

Once you’re done folding the cheese, salt and pepper, and chives, you will then pour the batter into the waffle iron.

Now cook the chaffles for 3–4 minutes.  Lastly, remove with a silicone spatula and serve warm.

NOTE: This egg and cheese chaffle recipe pairs well with cream cheese sprinkled with chili flakes. You can also use these easy chaffles to make a BLT sandwich.

And, because these are keto chaffles (no flour of any kind), they are the perfect keto breakfast idea!

Variations of this cheese waffle recipe

This basic egg and cheese chaffle recipe is incredibly versatile, so please feel free to play around with different ingredients and customize it in a way that best suits you! For example, you could…

  • Add some almond flour and baking powder: Almond flour will keep the chaffles keto friendly, but the addition of these two ingredients to the recipe will result in a more waffle like finished product.  All you’ll need are 2 tablespoons of your favorite almond flour and ½ teaspoons of baking powder.
  • Use different seasonings: I only use salt, chives, and pepper, but you can add some of your favorite seasonings to the recipe.
  • Use a different type of cheese: I used cheddar cheese, but you can substitute with shredded mozerealla cheese if you prefer.
